Strengthening long-term care capacity in Port Stanley, ON | Extendicare begins construction on new long-term care home
The milestone is a particularly special occasion for residents living in the current home, which has been providing quality care to residents in the community for nearly 50 years.
“I live here with my wife and our friends,” says Alan Legg, a resident at Extendicare Port Stanley. “I love music and have quite a collection in my room. I know the new home will have more space to sit together and listen to music together as a group, which will be really nice. I am looking forward to seeing it when it’s all done.”
The announcement was also highlighted by local media, including the London Free Press and St. Thomas Today.
When doors open, all 60 residents in the current home, in addition to 68 new residents, for a total 128-bed capacity, will be welcomed by our skilled and compassionate care team, which will also grow to serve the larger resident population. Construction will be completed in 2027.
“Our rebuild of Extendicare Port Stanley – Extendicare’s eighth redevelopment project – will improve quality of life for our current residents and increase access to care for seniors in the region who have been waiting for long-term care when doors open in 2027. This new build would not be possible without the extraordinary support of the Government of Ontario and the municipality of Port Stanley. We are grateful to both governments for their collaboration and commitment,” says Michael Guerriere, President and CEO of Extendicare.
Extendicare is grateful for our municipal and provincial partners who helped make this new home possible. The provincial government’s Construction Fund Subsidy has allowed us to break ground on three new homes across Ontario this month alone.

Square footage per resident will double in the new home, resulting in significantly more room to better support resident activities, dining, physiotherapy, as well as lounges for family engagement. The home will also feature a designated Memory Care community, that thoughtfully employs dementia-friendly design.
It was also a special day for family and friends of those living in the existing home. “I spend a lot of time here with my mom,” says Deb Benner, a resident family member at Extendicare Port Stanley. “Having the space to be together and spend time with each other is important to us but also to all the other families in this home. We are looking forward to the new home being built, it will mean a lot to us.”
